not just another
western comedy movie

Two Mules For Sister Sarah is served with strongly drawn characters and witty dialogues. Among Clint Eastwood films, Two Mules For Sister Sara movie is like a holy experience for all who love western comedy movies. Though Clint Eastwood is great and magnanimous as usual, but it is Shirley MacLaine who steals the show with her innocent face and wicked dialogues.

*Although the correct name of this western movie is Two Mules For Sister Sara, at many places on this page I would be using Two Mules For Sister Sarah instead, just to help those people who are searching for this movie on google with Two Mules For Sister Sarah name two mules for sister sarah !

  • Shirley MacLaine ... Sister Sara

Two Mules For Sister Sarah is one of those western comedy movies which are worth watching for their strongly drawn characters than for their story. And when the western characters are drawn so neatly, then the outcome is one hilarious B western movie like Two Mules For Sister Sara. I chuckled and grinned many a times while watching and writing a review of this entertaining movie. This usually doesn’t happen to me while writing western movie reviews.

As the movie begins you see 'the most dangerous man alive' (they say so in movie's tagline) Hogan (Clint Eastwood), traveling through a dangerous wild territory on his horse. He passes by snakes, skeletons, spiders and mountain tigers as you watch movie credits running. On his way he saves one woman (Shirley MacLaine) from being raped by three cowboys just to find out that the woman he saved is a nun. And here begins this comical Clint Eastwood western.

Two Mules For Sister Sara
Lady, if you weren't a nun
I'd let you save your own bacon!

On this fun ride named Two Mules For Sister Sarah, a humorous mercenary and a smart nun travel together, with their own 'secret' missions. There are many scenes in Two Mules For Sister Sarah* which really tickle your funny bone. Clint Eastwood has crawled under the skin of money-minded Hogan superbly and Shirley MacLaine has played a 'suspiciously behaving' rebellion nun you will fall in love with. Women in western movies are usually presented as show pieces only. But in Two Mules For Sister Sara movie, Sara is the key character of this movie.

They are different from each other - He is daring, she is meek. He is a paid warrior but she is a rebel by will (French army is on Sister Sara's trail). He is ambitious and she is clever. But still they are useful to each other. Now Hogan has to protect and escort her to Mexican guerilla rebels safely and Sister Sara has to tell him vital details of a French army garrison so that he can rob it. And on this entertaining journey we find Hogan being attracted to Sister Sara.

Two Mules For Sister Sara
Always Keep A 'Safe' Distance

Two Mules For Sister Sarah keeps you guessing about Sister Sara's morality. She turns angel and she turns devil in no time. She is pure fun to watch in the movie. Imagine these scenes from this western:

  • Sister Sara blesses on the graves of dead goons and an angry Clint Eastwood snatches back his water canteen from Sara, saying "Sister, if you gonna bless them, you bless them dry!"

  • Two Mules For Sister Sara
Two Mules For Sister Sarah and a Cigar too!

  • Sister Sara smokes Hogan's discarded cigar covertly and appears in a happy mood afterwards. Each time poor Hogan catches her doing something suspicious, she defends herself by saying "Church allows this..." .. it's amazingly funny.

  • When Hogan plans to blow a french train, a drunk Sister Sara utters "We better be hurry, I have never seen a train blown to hell and gone before"

  • Sister Sara slaps a drunk Hogan calling him 'Bastard'. After he sobers up and asks her "Did I or didn't I hear you
calling me a Bastard ?", she quickly replies "I suppose whiskey can make you hear anything".

Two Mules For Sister Sara
Tell me when to hold my breath..

Two Mules For Sister Sarah shows what difference a strongly written character can make to a movie. Story wise there is nothing much new in Two Mules For Sister Sara movie. It’s same old good-joins-bad-on-a-mission plot, used in many popular western movies. But how much neatly and artistically the characters are drawn, makes all the difference. I certainly knew the ending of the movie but still I enjoyed every minute of it.

Two Mules For Sister Sara
At Least You Can Take Off Your Hat!

And one more thing, although in Two Mules For Sister Sara movie, Clint Eastwood gives an amazing performance as a wicked, humorous and a frustrated mercenary, it is Shirley MacLaine as Sister Sara who steals the show with her beauty, wits and rib-tickling dialogues. You just can't get enough of her. Whether she is riding a funny donkey or climbing a bridge to plant dynamite, Sister Sara will keep you with her on every second of this nice western comedy movie. She will be remembered whenever women in western movies will be assessed for their acting skills. While it's hard to find good comedy westerns, and finding one with a leading lady ?...is almost rare. So Two Mules For Sister Sarah is a lovely treat for all fans of western comedies and also for those who love to see a western film without a damsel-in-distress-plot for a change smily.

Not just for all fans of Clint Eastwood Westerns only, Two Mules For Sister Sara is recommended for every movie lover who admires a nice comedy.
