Red Sun (1971)
An East-West-Combo

Although Red Sun movie is a formula spaghetti western, it entertains nicely with its East-meets-West flavor. Red Sun is worth watching for Toshiro Mifune as Samurai warrior and Charles Bronson. Not a great spaghetti western but still a nice catch!

When a ruthless west didn’t seem to be much furious to movie goers then a team of writers (Laird Koenig, Denne Bart Petitclerc, William Roberts and Lawrence Roman) seemed to come up Red Sun, the idea of introducing deadly east to the western cinema. More is merrier you can say! Although it is a good watch but the outcome is not that magnificent as it could be. The idea of east-west-combo is so tempting that it was reused again in 2000 (Shanghai Noon).

Directed by Terence Young, this mixed burger from western cinema can quench your western hunger but not with an unforgettable taste. Almost half of the movie is wasted in establishing the deadly image of a samurai warrior. While writing this western movie review, I couldn’t decide movie was better in first or the last half. But none the less, Red Sun is very popular among spaghetti westerns (Just check the votes it got on imdb.com) and widely watched one also.

Red Sun
Train Robbery is an art..and Old West Knew It

Red Sun opens with a trail robbery (a very lucrative and quick profession in old west). Two outlaws, Link (Charles Bronson) and Gauche (Alain Delon) rob this train with full preparation. Unfortunately for Japanese ambassador and his samurai body-guards who are on this train on USA official trip, one golden sword which is a token of love from Japan is stolen in this robbery. This well planned robbery goes awry when one partner turns against another and Gauche flees with all the loot money leaving Link on the mercy of Japanese.

Now Japanese ambassador assigns Kuroda a samurai warrior this task of bringing back the Samurai sword in seven days. As the time is most important factor of this hunt, Kuroda takes Link with him reluctantly who wants to kick Gauche and bring his booty back. At first Link hates to be a travel guide of a samurai warrior but soon they become friends and hot on the trail of Gauche.

Red Sun
Two makes a team

I know it all seems to be a simple western movie plot. It is. But watching two different guys working together and overcoming their personal and cultural differences in this spaghetti western movie is worth a watch. Toshiro Mifune who plays Kuroda successfully makes you believe how composed and true to his word is a true samurai warrior, opposite to a hot headed and a crooked mind western outlaw Link.

Rest to keep our warriors occupied in this spaghetti western movie there is an Indian attack and a prostitute. So when Gauche is not chased these two elements will accompany you to amuse you. Overall movie is just another spaghetti western with Train robbery, prostitutes, Indian and loot money.I will recommend this movie to novice spaghetti watchers. Enjoy..
